Woodlands man, 27, puts up posters to look for ‘someone to BTO with’, receives replies from 7 women

A 27-year-old man from Woodlands, surnamed Huang, has taken an unconventional approach to finding a girlfriend by putting up posters around Woodlands MRT station and VivoCity. The posters, which appeared this week, read: “Hi, I’m looking for someone to BTO with me. [If you are an] easy-going and friendly woman aged between 21 and 35, message Don [at mobile number]. Let’s work together 😃☕️” Huang, who works as a store manager at a local apparel shop, aims to find a partner to apply for the new Built-To-Order (BTO) flats in Woodlands in October 2024.

Background

Huang’s decision to put up posters stems from his desire to find a girlfriend quickly, as he is keen on securing a BTO flat in Woodlands. Despite being at a suitable age for marriage, Huang has struggled to find a significant other since his last relationship ended two years ago. He has tried both online and offline methods to meet people but has not had much success. Huang expressed frustration with dating apps, citing their high costs and the lack of suitable matches.

Why put up posters?

Huang printed 18 posters and placed them on walls and pillars in high-traffic areas around Woodlands MRT station on September 1. He explained that his primary goal was to find a girlfriend who shares his interest in applying for a BTO flat. Huang emphasised that he values character and personality over appearances and hopes to find someone who shares his domestic skills, such as cooking and doing house chores.

Received replies from seven women

The posters have garnered attention, with seven women contacting Huang since September 4. “One of them thought my poster was interesting, and I asked her about her plans for the future. We chatted for a bit before she told me she needed to hang up. However, another lady invited me to meet up and have a meal together this week,” Huang shared. Despite the positive responses, Huang remains cautious, wary of potential scams or pranks.

Legal concerns and future plans

Huang has decided not to put up any more posters in public, as a friend reminded him that doing so might violate the law. Most of the posters he initially put up have already been removed as of September 6. Huang’s unique approach highlights the challenges of dating in Singapore and the lengths to which some individuals will go to find a partner.

Implications for future BTO applicants

Huang’s story comes at a time when the demand for BTO flats in Woodlands is high. The upcoming launch in October 2024 is expected to be one of the largest, with 1,200 units spread across two sites. This high demand underscores the importance of securing a partner for those interested in applying for these flats. Huang’s experience may inspire others to think outside the box in their search for a significant other, especially in a competitive housing market.
