Woman in South Africa finds rat sliced up & baked in half-eaten loaf of bread

A woman in Durban, South Africa, experienced a horrifying surprise when she discovered a dismembered rat baked into a loaf of bread she had already partially consumed. Nombulelo Mkumla found the rodent embedded in the middle slices of the wholewheat loaf she had purchased three days earlier from Spar, an international supermarket chain. The unsettling discovery left her traumatised and questioning the safety measures at the bread’s manufacturing facility.

## Background

The incident occurred when Mkumla noticed something furry protruding from the edge of a few slices of bread. Initially in denial, she consulted friends who confirmed her worst fears, identifying the foreign object as a rat. A video she posted on social media revealed the gruesome sight: a clean-cut, dismembered rat with its innards visible, resembling a physical CT scan of the creature.

## In denial

Mkumla had already consumed half of the loaf before discovering the rat, raising the disturbing question of where the rest of the animal might be. She speculated that the rat likely got into the bread at the factory. “This experience has been traumatic and disgusting!” Mkumla stated, expressing her distress over the incident.

## Things like this are bound to happen

When Mkumla returned to the shop to complain, she was directed to the bread’s manufacturer, PepsiCo. A representative from Sasko, a subsidiary of PepsiCo that supplied the bread, contacted her but did little to alleviate her concerns. Although the spokesperson apologised, he mentioned that “it gets hot” in the bakery and that “things like this are bound to happen.” He assured her that measures were being enacted to prevent such occurrences in the future and that she would not experience adverse health effects. However, these assurances only served to anger Mkumla further.

A different PepsiCo representative later described the incident as an “isolated occurrence” and reported that samples from the same batch of bread showed “no discrepancies,” according to IOL.

## Previous incidents and future implications

This incident has raised questions about the safety and hygiene standards in food manufacturing facilities. While PepsiCo has labelled it an isolated case, the traumatic experience has left Mkumla and others wary of potential future occurrences. The company has promised to implement stricter measures to prevent such incidents, but the event has undoubtedly shaken consumer confidence.

As food safety remains a critical concern, this case underscores the importance of rigorous quality control in the food industry to ensure such horrifying discoveries do not happen again.
