Thailand zoo’s super cute baby hippo ‘Moo Deng’ to be on pants & shirt merch

A zoo in Chon Buri province, Thailand, unveiled a clothing collection inspired by its baby pygmy hippopotamus, Moo Deng, on Sep. 8. The female baby hippo, known for her playful antics, gained widespread attention in August 2024 after her photos went viral on social media.

Background

Moo Deng first appeared at Khao Kheow Open Zoo on Jul. 25, 2024, according to Pattaya Mail. The zoo held a local voting contest to name the hippo, with options like “Moo Deng” (Bouncy Pig), “Moo Daeng” (Red Pig), and “Moo Sab” (Minced Pig). Over 20,000 participants voted via the zoo’s Facebook page, with “Moo Deng” emerging as the winner due to her energetic nature.

Moo Deng’s playful nature

Moo Deng’s playful and sometimes feisty behaviour has endeared her to many. She is known for not liking to be touched, often trying to escape from her caretaker’s clutches during mealtime. In a video shared on Aug. 21, she was seen attempting to nip at her caretaker’s fingers. Her dramatic facial expressions, especially when being sprayed with water, have also amused many. Despite her temperament, visitors, referred to as “Moo Deng’s fans,” flock to her enclosure for a closer look.

Zoo announces shirt and pants

On Sep. 8, Khao Kheow Open Zoo announced a new merchandise collection inspired by Moo Deng. The collection includes a short-sleeved shirt and palazzo pants, both adorned with images of the hippo’s expressions and antics. The pants also feature doodled flower designs. The zoo has not disclosed further details about the merchandise.

Future implications

The introduction of Moo Deng-themed merchandise is part of the zoo’s efforts to capitalise on her popularity. This move is expected to boost visitor engagement and generate additional revenue for the zoo. As Moo Deng continues to grow, her antics and the resulting merchandise could become a significant attraction, drawing even more visitors to Khao Kheow Open Zoo.
