Temasek Foundation appoints Jennie Chua, 80, as new chairman

Temasek Foundation, the philanthropic arm of state sovereign fund Temasek Holdings, has appointed Jennie Chua, 80, as its new chairman. Chua will take over from outgoing chair Benny Lim, effective from 1 September 2024. Lim, 68, has served as the foundation’s chairman for the past four years and will remain as a board director after stepping down.

Background

In a statement on 4 September, Temasek Foundation highlighted Chua’s extensive experience, noting her involvement with the foundation since its inception in 2007. Chua was the first general manager of Raffles Hotel in 1990 and co-founded Beeworks, the F&B company that introduced Jollibee to Singapore. The foundation expressed its gratitude to Lim for his leadership during the Covid-19 pandemic and his role in guiding its strategic transformation.

Chua’s extensive experience

“As we welcome Ms Jennie Chua into this role, we look forward to an exciting new chapter of growth for the organisation,” Temasek Foundation stated. Chua’s career spans several decades, and her leadership is expected to bring valuable insights to the foundation. Her previous roles include significant contributions to the hospitality and F&B sectors, which underscore her capability to steer the foundation towards new opportunities.

Lim’s contributions

The foundation also acknowledged Benny Lim’s contributions, noting his stewardship during challenging times. Lim, a veteran civil servant, previously chaired the National Parks Board and currently chairs the Housing and Development Board. “TF extends our deepest gratitude to Mr Benny Lim for his valuable contributions and dedication,” the foundation said.

Future implications

The transition in leadership marks a significant moment for Temasek Foundation. With Chua at the helm, the organisation is poised to leverage her vast experience to further its philanthropic mission. The foundation’s focus on strategic growth and transformation is expected to continue, building on the solid groundwork laid by Lim. This change in leadership is anticipated to bring fresh perspectives and renewed energy to the foundation’s initiatives.
