S’pore drivers can collect VEP tag from Woodlands info centre from Sep. 18, 2024

Motorists in Singapore will be able to collect their vehicle entry permit (VEP) tag from the VEP information counter in Woodlands starting from 18 September 2024. The counter is located on the third floor of 186 Woodlands Industrial Park E5. This new option, which became available for selection on 3 September 2024, is the third method for obtaining the mandatory RFID tag required for all foreign-registered vehicles entering Malaysia from Singapore beginning October 2024. The other two options are to get the tag fixed in Johor or have it mailed to Singapore.

## Background

The introduction of the Woodlands collection point aims to provide greater convenience for Singapore motorists. Previously, drivers had to either travel to Johor Bahru or wait for the tag to be mailed to them. The RFID tag is essential for monitoring and managing the entry of foreign-registered vehicles into Malaysia. TCSens, the vendor appointed by Malaysia’s Road Transport Department (JPJ), confirmed the new collection option through an appointment confirmation email dated 3 September 2024.

## Installed on windscreen

Drivers opting to collect their RFID tags from Woodlands will have the tag installed on their windscreen, unless it is deemed unsuitable, in which case it will be installed on the headlamp. This differs from the tags mailed to Singapore, which are designed for headlamp installation. The RFID tag is crucial for compliance with Malaysia’s vehicle entry regulations, and failure to display the tag from 1 October 2024 could result in fines up to RM2,000 (S$600) or a jail term of up to six months.

## Service details and costs

The service at the Woodlands VEP information counter will cost S$39, as announced by TCSens on 3 September 2024. This fee is in addition to the RM10 (S$2.98) cost of the RFID tag itself. The counter, which opened on 19 August 2024, has been managing a significant number of walk-ins, necessitating additional staff to handle the queues. The centre currently employs six staff members, including Mr Ng, who have been instrumental in managing the influx of motorists.

## Future implications

The establishment of the Woodlands VEP information counter is expected to streamline the process for Singapore motorists, reducing the need for cross-border travel solely for the purpose of obtaining the RFID tag. This move is part of a broader effort to enhance the efficiency and convenience of vehicle entry procedures between Singapore and Malaysia. As the October deadline approaches, it is anticipated that more motorists will take advantage of the local collection option, potentially leading to further expansions or additional services at the Woodlands centre.
