Soh Rui Yong, 33, sets 5km men’s road race national record

Singapore’s top runner Soh Rui Yong has set a new national record for the 5km road event. At a race held in Battersea Park, London, on 13 September, Soh finished in 15 minutes and 8 seconds, shaving off 7 seconds from his previous best timing achieved in August 2023. The achievement was announced by Singapore Athletics on Facebook. Besides this new feat, Soh also holds the national records for the 5000m on the track, 10,000m, 10km road event, half marathon, and marathon.

Background

Soh Rui Yong, 33, has been a prominent figure in Singapore’s long-distance running scene. His latest achievement adds to his impressive list of national records, showcasing his consistent performance and dedication to the sport. The race in Battersea Park, known for its competitive field and challenging conditions, provided the perfect backdrop for Soh to push his limits once again.

Was feeling under the weather

Leading up to the race, Soh mentioned he had been dealing with a “throat/chest cold” and noted the drastic changes in London’s weather. Despite these challenges, he decided to compete, believing he could “tough through the race as long as he stayed positive.” This determination highlights his resilience and commitment to his sport.

Running in the dark

Soh described the race conditions, noting that parts of Battersea Park were not well-lit, with hazards like bumps, trees, and bollard posts. “So it’s possible to run fast there because of the pack, but it’s also important to see where you’re going and stay on your feet,” he said. To navigate these conditions, Soh opted for a conservative strategy, staying off the back of the elite men’s field to ensure he could see where he was going. This approach allowed him to focus on achieving his time goal rather than placing high in the race.

Additional achievements

In addition to setting a new national record, Soh has been balancing his athletic career with academic pursuits. Recently, he earned a law degree, demonstrating his ability to excel both on and off the track. This dual achievement underscores his versatility and dedication to personal growth.

Soh’s continuous breaking of records and his recent academic accomplishment serve as an inspiration to many, showing that with determination and hard work, it is possible to excel in multiple areas of life. His future endeavours, both in athletics and beyond, will undoubtedly be watched with great interest.
