PSA: You can now use Taobao in English

Taobao has introduced an English interface, making it easier for non-Chinese speakers to shop on the popular e-commerce platform. This update caters to the significant demand for an English language shopping experience, particularly among Singaporean users. The new interface allows users to navigate the app, search for products, and track orders in English, enhancing the overall convenience and accessibility of the platform.

Background

Taobao, known for its affordable prices and vast variety of goods, has long been a favourite among shoppers. However, its primary operation in Chinese has been a barrier for those not fluent in the language. Recognising this issue, Taobao has now launched an English interface to make shopping more accessible and enjoyable for a broader audience.

Hooray

Online shopping has become increasingly popular due to its convenience and wide product range. Taobao’s new “Image Search” function further enhances this convenience. Users can upload images of desired items, and the app will identify and display similar products. Additionally, Taobao’s direct shipping service provides estimated delivery times and upfront shipping fees, ensuring a smooth shopping experience.

Promotion code and free shipping

New Taobao users can enjoy a ¥50 (approximately S$9) discount on orders with a minimum spend of ¥51 using the promotion code TBSGMS. This code is valid for the first order with a Singapore address, and redemptions are limited. Additionally, free shipping to Singapore is available for orders over ¥199 (approximately S$37) on products with the “Free Shipping over ¥199” tag. Taobao is also hosting a giveaway on their Facebook page, where 10 lucky winners will receive a S$30 promo code.

Future implications

The introduction of an English interface on Taobao marks a significant step towards making the platform more inclusive and user-friendly for a global audience. This move is likely to attract more international shoppers, boosting Taobao’s market presence outside China. As the platform continues to evolve, users can expect further enhancements and features aimed at improving the shopping experience for non-Chinese speakers.
