A driver abandoned his car after crashing it in Toa Payoh, revealing contraband in the vehicle’s trunk, which was subsequently seized by police. The incident occurred at Lorong 2 Toa Payoh on 13 September at 7:10 pm, right beside Toa Payoh Methodist Church.
Background
Photos from the scene showed one car rear-ending another on the two-lane road, with a third car stopped a short distance behind. Witnesses noted that although the accident involved three cars, only two drivers were present. The driver of the car that rear-ended the first vehicle was missing. The crash did not lead to any arguments among the drivers, but it caused a traffic jam. Residents reported that the vehicles remained at the scene until at least midnight, five hours after the accident.
Car searched
The police confirmed that one driver had fled the scene. Upon searching the abandoned vehicle, they discovered an e-vaporiser and drug-related paraphernalia. A witness observed that when police opened the trunk, they found two to three paper bags, which appeared to contain mooncake boxes, leading to speculation that the contraband was hidden inside these boxes. The suspected drug-related offences have been referred to the Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB), while the vape-related offence will be handled by the Health Sciences Authority (HSA).
Search for driver continues
The police are actively searching for the driver, who remains at large. This incident follows a similar case in June 2024, where a man fled after crashing his car into a lamp post in Yishun, leaving behind a female passenger who was subsequently arrested. The ongoing search for the Toa Payoh driver highlights the persistent issue of individuals attempting to evade law enforcement after committing offences.
Related incidents
In recent years, there have been multiple instances of drivers fleeing accident scenes in Singapore. In February 2021, a 34-year-old man was charged after losing control of his car and crashing into a pedestrian along Lorong 1 Toa Payoh. These incidents underscore the challenges faced by law enforcement in apprehending individuals involved in such crimes and the importance of community vigilance in reporting suspicious activities.
