A Mercedes collided with a motorcyclist while attempting to filter left on Braddell Road on 10 September. The 26-year-old motorcyclist, who was approaching from behind, flipped over the car and landed on the road. The incident occurred around 6 pm towards Lornie Highway. Both the police and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed the accident, and the motorcyclist was subsequently sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
Background
The accident was captured on video and shared on the “Roads.SG” Facebook page on 12 September. The clip quickly gained traction, amassing over 1,000 engagements and 500 comments by 13 September. The video shows the motorcyclist in a red shirt and yellow helmet riding down the left lane of a two-lane road, passing stationary vehicles on the right lane. As he approached a silver Mercedes, the driver briefly signalled left and filtered into the left lane, leading to the collision.
The accident
In the video, the motorcyclist can be seen riding close to the lane markings and passing several stationary vehicles. As he was about to pass the Mercedes, the driver signalled left and moved into the left lane. Unable to stop in time, the motorcyclist collided with the car, flipping over it and landing on the road. Debris was scattered across the road and pavement, causing vehicles behind to halt. Two motorcyclists stopped to assist the injured rider, who managed to sit up and get to his feet. The Mercedes driver also exited the vehicle to inspect the damage and converse with the rider.
Public reaction
The incident sparked a range of reactions online. Some users criticised the Mercedes driver for not checking their side mirror or blind spot before changing lanes. Others suggested that a blue lorry behind the car may have obstructed the view of both the driver and the motorcyclist. A few commenters felt that the motorcyclist was riding too close to the lane markings and suggested that the accident could have been avoided if he had kept to the left of his lane.
Driver, 63, assisting with investigations
The police confirmed that the 26-year-old male motorcyclist was conscious when conveyed to the hospital. The SCDF also confirmed that he was sent to Tan Tock Seng Hospital. The police stated that a 63-year-old female driver of the Mercedes is assisting with investigations, which are ongoing.
Accident-prone area
Braddell Road is known for its complex junctions and multiple turning lanes, making it an accident-prone area. This incident adds to a series of accidents in the vicinity, highlighting the need for increased caution and awareness among drivers and motorcyclists alike. The ongoing investigations will hopefully provide more clarity on the causes and potential preventive measures for such accidents in the future.
