Heavy road traffic expected at S’pore Sports Hub on Sep. 12 for Papal Mass

Heavy traffic is expected at the Singapore Sports Hub area on 12 September 2024, due to the Papal Mass. Pope Francis, 87, will be visiting Singapore from 11 to 13 September 2024, and will hold the Papal Mass at the National Stadium.

Background

This visit marks the first time in 38 years that a Pope has visited Singapore, with the last visit being by Pope St John Paul II on 20 November 1986. The event is anticipated to draw large crowds, necessitating significant logistical arrangements and security measures.

Heavy road traffic

Visitors requiring private hire or personal car transport should arrive early, as heavy road traffic and delays are expected, according to the Singapore Sports Hub. Access to the car park will be restricted to Car Park D, where vehicles will undergo police security checks. Limited parking spaces will be available, and the Singapore Sports Hub strongly advises visitors to use public transport, such as buses or the MRT.

Re-entry into the National Stadium is not allowed for the Papal Mass

Re-entry into the stadium will not be permitted. Amenities such as water dispensers and restrooms will be available inside the stadium, along with food and beverage options at concession stands. Volunteers in yellow and white striped T-shirts will be on hand to assist visitors. Attendees are encouraged to travel light and bring only essential items, as deposit services will not be available. A full livestream of the Papal Mass will be provided for those unable to attend in person.

Multiple venues closed

Several venues within the Singapore Sports Hub will be closed in preparation for the event. The 100PLUS Promenade will be closed from 10:30 pm on 11 September to 12 September. Additionally, Splash-N-Surf, the Skate Park, and Hard Courts will be closed on 12 September. A detailed list of closed venues and their timings can be found here.

Significance of the Papal visit

Cardinal William Goh, the Archbishop of Singapore, expressed his hopes for the visit: “It is my hope that this visit of the Holy Father, Pope Francis, will bring renewed fervour to all Catholics in Singapore, uniting them in faith and mission, especially in these most challenging of times.”
