Ex-S’pore reporter, 49, allegedly bites woman’s arm & sends husband threatening texts

Jessinta Tan Suat Lin, 49, was brought before a district court on Sep. 2 after allegedly biting a woman’s forearm and sending her husband threatening texts in separate incidents. She is also alleged to have thrown eggs and an incense bin at the woman. Tan, a former reporter who worked with news platforms including Today, faces charges of harassment, performing a rash act to endanger another person’s safety, and assault.

## Background

Tan’s alleged offences took place at the Westmont, a condominium situated at 17 West Coast Road. The incidents reportedly occurred on Feb. 16 and Apr. 28. Tan’s actions have led to her being charged with two counts each of harassment and performing a rash act, as well as one count of assault. The case has garnered attention due to Tan’s previous career as a journalist.

## Details of the incidents

On Feb. 16 at around 10pm, Tan allegedly bit another woman’s left arm and hit the latter’s head with an aluminium stick in the open space in front of a unit at the Westmont. Additionally, she is accused of throwing about six eggs and an incense bin towards the same woman. On Apr. 28, Tan allegedly sent her husband abusive and vulgar text messages in another unit at the Westmont, stating, “I’ll jump bail next month.”

## Legal implications

Tan’s bail review is scheduled for Sep. 11. If convicted of assault, she could face a maximum jail term of two years and a fine of up to S$5,000. Each count of performing a rash act carries a potential jail term of up to six months and a fine of up to S$2,500. The severity of the charges underscores the legal consequences of her alleged actions.

## Broader context

The case highlights the potential escalation of harassment and threatening behaviour into physical violence. Protective Orders, commonly known as restraining orders, are often recommended in such situations to prevent further harm. This case serves as a reminder of the importance of legal measures in safeguarding individuals from escalating threats.

## Future implications

The outcome of Tan’s bail review and subsequent legal proceedings will be closely watched. The case may set a precedent for how similar incidents are handled in the future, particularly involving individuals with a public profile. It also raises questions about the support systems in place for victims of harassment and assault, and the role of the legal system in providing protection and justice.
