Library@Orchard will temporarily close its doors on 28 October 2024 for a significant revamp, the National Library Board (NLB) announced on 6 September 2024. This initiative is part of NLB’s ongoing efforts to rejuvenate its libraries and provide new experiences for patrons. The library, which opened a decade ago, is expected to reopen in the second half of 2026 with enhanced features, including tech-enabled interactive spaces and a new children’s section.
Background
NLB’s Chief Executive Officer, Ng Cher Pong, highlighted the timeliness of the revamp, stating, “It is timely after 10 years, to reimagine what more we can do with the space, including how the library can be made more interactive and immersive to enhance our patrons’ experience in reading, learning and discovery. The revamp will bring an exciting next chapter for the library here in the heart of Orchard Road for everyone.” The design and applied arts-focused collection will be relocated to the Central Arts Library at the National Library Building at Bugis and the National Design Centre by early 2025.
Pre-closure events
Before its closure, Library@Orchard will host a three-week programme titled “Design Is For Everyone: A decade of design, arts and community” from 8 to 27 October 2024. This event will celebrate the library’s decade-long journey in promoting art and design, featuring an exhibition and a community wall where patrons can share their memories.
New features and enhancements
The revamped Library@Orchard will introduce several new features aimed at enhancing the patron experience. These include tech-enabled interactive immersive spaces designed to make the library more engaging and a dedicated children’s section to cater to younger visitors. The relocation of the design and applied arts-focused collection to permanent locations will also centralise NLB’s arts resources, making them more accessible to the public.
Future implications
The closure and subsequent revamp of Library@Orchard are part of a broader strategy by NLB to rejuvenate its libraries across Singapore. This initiative aims to offer fresh services, spaces, and experiences for patrons, ensuring that libraries remain relevant and engaging in the digital age. The upgraded library is expected to set a new standard for public libraries in Singapore, providing a model for future developments.
