Car backs into Toa Payoh drain, SCDF rescues trapped driver

A driver had to be rescued after their car ended up stuck in a drain at a Toa Payoh car park on 4 September. The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) reported that the accident occurred at Block 210 Lorong 8 Toa Payoh around 11:40 am. The car had reversed into the drain, and footage of the rescue was later circulated on Facebook and TikTok.

Background

The incident took place during a rainy period, which may have contributed to the accident. The car park, located near a large drain, had a section of its green railing dislodged due to the impact. The SCDF was promptly alerted and arrived at the scene with at least six personnel and three emergency vehicles.

The rescue

Videos shared on social media showed the white car partially submerged in the drain, with a ladder lowered into the drain as part of the rescue operation. Users on the “Singapore roads accident.com” Facebook page speculated that the driver might have misjudged distances or accidentally stepped on the accelerator while reversing.

Trapped driver rescued by SCDF

SCDF confirmed that one person was found trapped in the driver’s seat. Using hydraulic rescue equipment, SCDF personnel successfully extricated the individual. The driver was assessed for minor injuries but refused to be taken to the hospital.

Related incidents

This incident is not isolated. On 19 May 2024, a 78-year-old driver had to be extricated by SCDF after his car flipped on its side in Toa Payoh. The police were alerted to the accident at about 1:10 pm, which was believed to have been caused by the car skidding. These incidents highlight the importance of road safety and the readiness of SCDF to respond to emergencies.
