Train services along the East-West Line (EWL) between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations will be suspended on 27 September, according to a news release from SMRT and the Land Transport Authority (LTA) on 26 September. The decision to halt shuttle train services between these stations was made to expedite repairs on the damaged rail, as running the shuttle could delay the full restoration of regular train services by several days. In the meantime, free regular and bridging bus services will be available for commuters travelling between the two stations.
Background
The disruption follows extensive damage caused by a faulty train to tracks and trackside equipment on 25 September. SMRT and LTA initially considered operating a shuttle train service between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations but concluded that prioritising repairs would restore full service sooner. The aim is to have full train services back by 30 September.
SMRT aiming to restore full service on Sep. 30
On the afternoon of 26 September, SMRT announced that it was exploring the possibility of running a shuttle train service between the affected stations. Despite efforts to expedite repairs on one of the tracks, it was ultimately decided that focusing on full restoration was more beneficial. “It is better to prioritise repair and expedite restoring full service earlier, rather than run a 20-minute shuttle between Jurong East and Buona Vista stations,” stated LTA and SMRT. The target for full service restoration is set for 30 September.
