Cat in US got lost from owners during camping trip & travelled more than 1,400km home

A male cat in the United States, which got lost during a camping trip in Wyoming in June 2024, “miraculously” made his way back home two months later. Rayne Beau, a Siamese cat, escaped from his owners’ camper van at Yellowstone National Park and ran into the forest. He was later found in Roseville, California, and sent to the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) shelter.

Background

Rayne Beau’s owners, Benny and Susanne Anguiano, had brought him along with another family cat to Yellowstone’s Fishing Bridge Recreational Vehicle (RV) Park on June 4. It was the cats’ first trip, and Rayne Beau reportedly ran into the forest after being “startled.” The couple, based in Salinas, searched for him for four days, trying to lure him out with treats and toys. They finally drove home on June 8 after unsuccessful attempts to locate him but never gave up hope that he would be found eventually.

Ran into forest, owners looked for him for four days

Rayne Beau’s sudden disappearance into the forest left his owners distraught. Benny and Susanne Anguiano spent four days searching the dense woods of Yellowstone, using treats and toys to try and coax him back. Despite their best efforts, they had to leave the park on June 8 without their beloved pet.

Found 322km away from home, lost weight

Two months later, Rayne Beau was found 322km from his home in California. A woman noticed him loitering in the area and decided to feed him before he was trapped and sent to the local SPCA on August 3. His microchip was scanned, and his owners were contacted. Rayne Beau was in poor condition, having lost around 40 per cent of his body weight, dropping from 5.9kg to 3.6kg. A “before and after” photo shared by his owners on Facebook on September 18 showed a significant difference in his appearance. His paws were also “really beat up,” according to Susanne.

The journey home

The couple believes that Rayne Beau might have made his way home by himself, although how he managed to travel such a long distance remains a mystery. Before he was lost, he weighed about 14 pounds. The journey took a toll on him, but he has since been recovering at home. For added safety, Rayne Beau has been fitted with an Apple AirTag and a global GPS tracker.

Rayne Beau’s recovery and future

Rayne Beau is now back with his family, recovering from his ordeal. His story has captivated many, highlighting the resilience and determination of pets. The Anguianos are relieved to have their adventurous cat back and are taking extra precautions to ensure he doesn’t get lost again. The fitting of an Apple AirTag and a global GPS tracker will help keep track of Rayne Beau’s whereabouts in the future.
