The Singapore Food Agency (SFA) has detected sulphur dioxide in Gold Plum Vinegar imported from China by Goy Chiap Hin Pte Ltd, which was not declared on the food packaging label, according to a press release on 18 September. The implicated product is a 550ml bottle called “Gold Plum Vinegar” with a best-before date of 30 June 2027. As sulphur dioxide is an allergen, SFA has directed the importer to recall the implicated products, and the recall is ongoing.
Background
Sulphur dioxide is an allergen that can cause reactions in individuals who are hypersensitive to sulphites. Symptoms may include hives, itchiness, stomachache, diarrhoea, and vomiting. Under Singapore’s Food Regulations, food products containing ingredients known to cause hypersensitivity must be declared on food packaging labels to protect consumers with food allergies.
Health risks
“Presence of excessive levels of sulphur dioxide in food could result in allergenic reactions in individuals who are hypersensitive to sulphites,” SFA stated. They advised consumers who have purchased the affected product and are intolerant of or allergic to sulphites not to consume it. Those who have consumed the implicated product and have health concerns should seek medical advice.
What is sulphur dioxide?
Sulphur dioxide is sometimes used in food and drinks as a preservative and antioxidant. While it is relatively harmless to healthy individuals at recommended concentrations, it can be dangerous to those sensitive to sulphites.
Ongoing recall
The recall of Gold Plum Vinegar is currently ongoing. SFA has directed Goy Chiap Hin Pte Ltd to remove the implicated products from the market to ensure consumer safety. This action underscores the importance of accurate food labelling to prevent allergic reactions and protect public health.
Consumer advice
Consumers are urged to check their purchases and avoid consuming the affected product if they are intolerant of or allergic to sulphites. The SFA continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as necessary. This incident highlights the need for vigilance in food safety and the importance of regulatory compliance in food labelling.
