2 injured after incident at Mandai Road, person seen lying on road next to portable air compressor

A portable air compressor fell off a lorry and onto Mandai Road around 3:45 pm on Sep. 3, injuring two people. The Singapore Police Force (SPF) confirmed that a 52-year-old male motorcyclist and his 45-year-old female pillion were taken to the hospital following the incident.

Background

The incident occurred on Mandai Road towards Woodlands Road. A video posted on the SG Road Vigilante Facebook page showed part of the road cordoned off with traffic cones, and a blue portable air compressor stuck on the road median. A paramedic was seen attending to a person lying on the ground behind the air compressor, while other officers were present at the scene. The netizen who posted the video alleged that the air compressor was not properly secured to the lorry, causing it to roll off and hit the motorcyclist. Portable air compressors are commonly used at construction sites to power heavy tools.

What happened

The video footage revealed that the road was partially barricaded, and the portable air compressor was lodged on the road median. A paramedic was seen tending to an injured person, while other officers were also on-site. The netizen claimed that the air compressor had been improperly secured, leading to it falling off the lorry and striking the motorcyclist. Portable air compressors are essential tools at construction sites, providing compressed air to power various heavy tools.

Investigations are ongoing

Both the SPF and the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) confirmed they were alerted to the accident involving the lorry and motorcycle. The SCDF transported the injured motorcyclist and pillion to Khoo Teck Puat Hospital. A 39-year-old male lorry driver is currently assisting with investigations. Police inquiries into the incident are ongoing.

Past incidents on Mandai Road

This is not the first time Mandai Road has witnessed such accidents. On Good Friday, March 30, 2018, four people, including a child, were injured in an accident involving two cars at the junction of Mandai Lake Road and Mandai Road. A video posted by Facebook user Mikaelo Dayrit showed two wrecked cars and debris scattered across the road, with one car having toppled a traffic light. The recurring nature of such incidents highlights the need for stringent safety measures on this busy road.
