"Singapore's Parliament is scheduled to debate two motions related to public housing affordability and accessibility on Feb 6th. National Development Minister, Desmond Lee, filed a motion to affirm the importance of keeping public housing accessible and affordable for Singaporeans, while protecting their interests. On the other hand, Non-Constituency MPs Leong Mun Wai and Hazel Poa from the Progress Singapore Party (PSP) filed a motion calling for a review of the government's housing policies.
Senior Minister of State for National Development, Sim Ann, clarified that although both motions may sound similar, they are different. The PSP's motion implies that the government hasn't done enough to make public housing affordable and accessible, a claim which the government disagrees with. Sim Ann said that the government's intent and strategy for public housing will be made clear during the debate.
The public housing debate follows an exchange between Sim Ann and Leong Mun Wai in December 2022, regarding the pricing policies for Build-To-Order flats. Leong had asserted that land costs shouldn't be factored into the pricing of HDB flats, a proposal that was deemed ""not logical"" by Lee during the Jan 10th Parliament sitting.
In September 2021, Parliament had also concurrently debated two motions filed by Leong and Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong, on jobs and foreign talent."
