"The National Development Minister of Singapore, Desmond Lee, has filed a motion to reaffirm the government's commitment to keep public housing affordable and accessible.
This comes amid concerns over the rising property market.
In a Facebook post, Senior Minister of State for National Development Sim Ann explained that the motion is different from one filed by Non-Constituency Members of Parliament last month, which stated that the government has not done enough to make public housing accessible and affordable.
Sim Ann stated that the government has always been dedicated to keeping public housing affordable and accessible while protecting the interests of current and future generations of Singaporeans.
She added that the government looks forward to a substantive debate on public housing, debunking false claims, and hearing constructive views and suggestions on how to fulfil the home ownership aspirations of citizens.
Prices of public housing flats have been on the rise since 2015, with prices of Build-to-Order (BTO) flats picking up pace in recent years. Analysts predict that Singapore may see its first million-dollar BTO flat in the future, although this is contingent on government subsidies. Prices of resale Housing and Development Board flats rose 2.3% in the fourth quarter of 2022, making it the 11th consecutive quarter that the resale price index has risen."
